Peel gets $10 million for an affordable housing retrofit. What does that mean for your home?

There is new money for housing upgrades, including a project here in Peel. But a funding announcement is not the same thing as a grant you can apply for today.

On October 2, 2026, Environment and Climate Change Canada announced about $66.3 million for energy efficiency financing and affordable housing projects across Canada. Its backgrounder lists 39 projects in Ontario.

The Peel project

The announcement includes $10 million for a carbon reduction retrofit at Weaver’s Hill, an affordable housing facility in the Region of Peel. This is funding for a named housing project, not a payment offered to every Peel homeowner.

Other Ontario programs are different

The same announcement includes residential retrofit financing in Huntsville, Waterloo Region and London. These are separate local programs with different financing approaches. Living in Ontario does not automatically make you eligible for each one.

Before you agree to an upgrade

If you are considering work on your home, start with the program serving your municipality. Ask whether applications are open, which work qualifies, and whether the assistance is a grant or money you must repay. Get the answer in writing before you sign a contractor agreement.

Then compare the actual work and total cost. Who is installing it? What warranty do you receive? What happens if the equipment needs repairs? A funding headline cannot answer those questions for your house.

If you are buying or renting

For a home advertised as energy efficient, ask for the records behind the claim. Equipment details, installation dates and actual utility bills tell you more than a label. Do not assume a neighbour’s savings will be yours.

For residents of a building receiving upgrades, the announcement alone does not establish a construction schedule or a change to rent. Ask the housing provider for the details affecting your building. Get professional advice for any question about your own agreement or obligations.
